Mythbusting: Cannabis Edition

Cannabis smoking has surged in popularity in recent years. With more and more people using the drug for recreational purposes, a lot of misinformation has started to multiply on the internet.

What make matters worse is that a number of otherwise reliable news organizations have shared these half-baked truths and senseless myths as “facts” which has done nothing but dissuade the occasional marijuana smoker.

To put an end to this cycle of misinformation, we’ve decided to address this issue head-on. Join us as we discuss and debunk some of the most common myths about marijuana.

Myth #1: You Can Overdose On Weed

The biggest lie that gets peddled by concerned parents and people with an agenda is that marijuana is a very dangerous and addictive compound. Owing to its addictive nature, there’s a high chance that you can overdose on it which could send you straight to the hospital.

Anyone who does weed has heard this statement at least once. The problem with this urban legend is that it sounds vaguely plausible. After all, there are many people who abuse the drug and smoke large quantities of it on a regular basis so it’s highly probable that they may overdose on it at some point, right?

Well, let’s take a closer look at the numbers. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that the number of people who die from a ' marijuana overdose' per year remains zero! In other words, there have been no reported instances when a person died from a marijuana overdose.

To put that number into context, illicit drugs like cocaine and heroin killed about 17,000 people while more than 25,700 people died from overdosing on prescribed drugs!! Simply put, marijuana is by far the safest drug available today!

Myth #2: You Can Cheat a Urine Test

On the other hand of the spectrum we have potheads who are so obsessed with the drug that they’re willing to state facts that don’t make any sense. One such commonly heard rumor is that it’s becoming increasingly easier to cheat a urine test so you have nothing to worry about!

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case as trace amounts of THC and CBD (chemicals commonly found in cannabis) will remain in your system for a little while. Every detox product that promises you a ‘safe’ and ‘quick’ detox is lying to you as there’s no way to achieve this effect.

So, if your job requires you to steer clear of the drug, we suggest honoring your contract. Remember, a recreational drug is not worth your livelihood and that, when it comes to smoking cannabis, it pays to smoke responsibly!

Myth #3: Cannabis Has No Medical Benefits

A little bit of backstory to this rumor; the new DEA created by Nixon in 1973 recognizes cannabis as a schedule 1 drug. For those of you who don’t know what this means, a schedule 1 drug is a compound that has no medical benefits whatsoever and reacts with our bodies psychoactive, thereby disrupting our system.

There’s a range of scientific evidence suggesting the countless medical benefits of cannabidiol (a marijuana extract). From minimizing arthritic pain to dealing with anxiety and depression, and from stress relief to anti-inflammation of blood vessels, there are countless research papers that directly contradict the outdated notion that ‘marijuana has no medical benefits’.

In fact, the scientific evidence is so overwhelming that many countries including Canada and Mexico have made the drug completely legal. From recreational use to medical applications, residents of these countries can use the drug as they like.
