Signs You Need to Change Your Bong Water

All experienced marijuana smokers know the importance of changing the bong water regularly. Dirty oil rigs, water pipes and bongs can make you sick as a parrot! Inhaling dank, turbid bong water can lead to a wide array of pathogens reaching your lungs. These include bacteria, ashy resin, and fungus among others. This significantly increases the risk of pulmonary infections, which we’re sure nobody wants.

Thankfully, all of this can be avoided if you change the water in your bong regularly. But if you’ve just started using a bong recently, how do you know when it’s time to change the water? Well, if you’re one of those people, you’re exactly in the right place! Over the course of this article, we’ll be listing the signs that indicate it’s time to change your bong water.

Bad Odor

If your bong has started to emit a foul odor, it should have been cleaned and had its water changed a long time ago. If it gets to this point, it’s advisable to clean your bong with salt and alcohol. However, the least you should be doing to disinfect your bong is running some boiling water through it.

The Water is dark and Murky

Has the water in your bong gone from clear to a dark, murky brown, and are there solid particles floating around in it? Well, if that’s the case, it needs to be changed ASAP. It’s normal to get a little discoloration with normal usage. However, the darker the color of the water gets, the greater the chance of lung infections.

Resin Buildup

In order to retrieve every last bit of the psychoactive effects, some smokers scrape the resin from within the dab ring. However, this is not something we would recommend. The resin that builds up inside a bong is often burned and charred, which significantly distorts not only the resin’s flavor but also of the other concentrate or bud that you’re smoking.

Mold and Mildew

We all know that water is one of life’s vital ingredients. Wherever there’s water, there’s a chance for life to thrive. However, the inside of a bong isn’t the right place for life to thrive. Even if you smoke regularly with your bong, pathogenic bacteria and fungus can still find a way to survive.

Of course, some fungi and bacteria are beneficial, but the ones that are growing inside your bong are not, and they certainly don’t belong in your lungs. If your bong is displaying any of the following signs, its best that you stop using it:

  • Pinkish discoloration
  • Fuzzy gray or white stuff
  • A Powdery looking white substance
  • Black speckles or discoloration
